CBS Sports is reporting that the official ownership transfer of the Houston Astros will likely result in the team moving to the American League West. This would re-align MLB into two 15-team leagues—with 5 teams in each of six divisions. The new format would take effect in the 2013 season. This set-up also means that there will be inter-league games every day of the 162-game season. The Astros, an NL franchise for all of its 50 years, will now need to configure their line-up for a DH and compete in a division with Texas, Anaheim, Seattle and Oakland. Both the Players Association and MLB brass favor the change, so it's a virtual lock to happen.
We can see some benefits for the Red Sox. First, the idiotic inter-league schedule will not be artificially shoe-horned into key stretches of the season—but spread out across all teams throughout the year. Also, this might lead to the adoption of the DH throughout baseball. Finally, the Red Sox get to play the Astros a few times a year.
