Well, it turns out that all the speculation about John Henry being distracted by soccer, LeBron James and NASCAR might be right on target. In a wide-ranging interview with WEEI's Dennis & Callahan, John Henry revealed an astonishing lack of knowledge about his Black September Red Sox.
First, he talked about how the last two third-place finishes might be the result of a lack of conditioning and proper medical care. Really? So, the dozens of articles over the last two years berating the Red Sox medical operation are just filtering through to the Forbes List Billionaire.
Second, and maybe most telling of all, the owner of the Boston Red Sox was unaware of the infamous "I Like Beer" music video—partly shot at Fenway with his starting pitchers goofing in their team uniforms. Henry has got to be the last person in Red Sox Nation to find out about the video. Was he perhaps too engrossed in the Liverpool "derby" that week? Distracted? You decide.
Other than that, nothing substantive was revealed in the interview—as Henry and Red Sox President and CEO Larry Luchhino used their "confidentiality" cover to avoid discussing anything related to the possible departure of Theo Epstein. All in all, a waste of time.
